Leadership of the ruling All Progressive Congress led by its national chairman, Chief John Oyegun visited Benue State at the weekend and castigated the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP, for destroying the nation’s economy.
Oyegun who was being represented by the South West Zonal Chairman of the party and former governor of Ekiti State, Engineer Segun Oni lashed at the PDP for throwing the nation into economic woes, part of which he said led to inadequate preventive measure against flooding.
The party leaders paid a sympathy visit to the recent flood victims in Makurdi, Benue State capital.
Speaking while meeting with the state governor, Samuel Ortom the party leader said that the financial recklessness of the past administration was what led the country into its present economic meltdown but added that with the coming of President Muhammadu Buhari administration a new dawn is coming into the nation.
“At the time PDP was leaving office in 2015 they were throwing money on the ground for people to scramble for it, just to make them believe that there was enough money whereas there was nothing left for the new government.”
“Though, I was part of the past government of the PDP, I did not partake in the looting. So, I can categorically attribute the recession suffered by Nigerians on the PDP’s greedy quest to accumulate unlawful wealth.”
On the issue of nonpayment of salaries, and pension arrears, the party leader said workers in some states of the federation are passing through difficult times as a result of the mismanagement of past administration.
He stated that the nonpayment of salary was not peculiar to Benue workers.
The chairman however sympathised with the state government and people of the state over the recent flood that rendered several persons homeless and commended both the federal and state governments for their prompt response to the plight of the victims.
In his response, the Benue State governor Samuel Ortom commended the APC government, his counterparts from other states, NGOs individuals and other philanthropists for their support, adding that he is overwhelmed by their show of concern.
