THERE was violence in Lagere area of Ile-Ife, Osun State on Saturday as warring cult groups engaged in a gun duel that lasted for almost 30 minutes, forcing residents and shop owners around the vicinity to flee.
Though the identities of the cult groups could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, eyewitnesses informed Tribune Online that the hostility began around 10.45 a.m in Lagere when members of the cult groups engaged in free for all, using dangerous weapons such as axes, machetes and guns.
Though the immediate cause of the clash remains unknown, mobile policemen drafted to the scene were able to restore normalcy, just as seven suspects were arrested over the incident.
Confirming the arrest to Tribune Online, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Osun State, Mrs Folasade Odoro said seven suspects have been apprehended by the Police in connection with the violence.
According to her, “upon information received by A Division, Ile-Ife that cult members were on rampage in Ife town, patrol teams and vigilante men were drafted to the scene. Seven suspects were arrested”.
“However, one Sodiq Olafare in a bid to escape jumped out of one of the patrol vehicles and he was re-arrested with bullets wound on his left leg. All the arrested suspects are under investigation, while Sodiq Olafare has been taken to hospital for medical treatment. The investigation is ongoing.”
