The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal Government, especially Inspector General of Police to show more commitment to the spate of killings and kidnapping in Nigeria saying Nigerians are tired of the rhetorics of ‘we are on top of the situation’
The Director, Legal and Public Affairs of CAN Mr Samuel Kwamkur, who stated this in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, said it is high time the law enforcement agencies lived up to expectation and actually be on top of the situation and fish out those behind all manners of dastardly acts in the country.
“We areW tired of the rhetorics of we are on top of the situation, the Inspector General of Police along with other security agencies, should tackle the insecurity head on, though they are trying their best, but much still need to be done.
“Practically speaking, they should live by their words, there are many communities under the siege of various forms of hoodlums today, places of worship are being attacked, worshippers killed, so, there is the need for urgent steps to arrest the situation,” he said
He implores the security agencies to also look inwards and reexamine men and officers under them and also ensure that those arrested for various crimes in the country are prosecuted accordingly.
Meanwhile, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria Most Reverend Ignatius Ayau Kaigama has condemned in strong terms the recent attacks on St Philip’s Catholic Church in Ozubulu in Nnewi diocese of Anambra State.
The CBCN President who stated this in an interview with the Vatican Radio in Rome monitored in Jos, expressed shock and sadness about the attack, adding that the attack was terribly inhuman and barbaric.
“Despite these attacks, Catholics in Nigeria will continue to be strong and committed Christians. We urge them to be ready and willing to continue to show their commitment to Jesus through a life of witness,” Kaigama advised.
