Without effecting a change in the attitude of traders and other market space users sustainable waste management will continue to remain a challenge.
This is according to a study conducted by FunmilayoAmoo and Bolanle Wahab, researchers from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Unversity of Ibadan.
In their study titled “Particiption of traders in solid waste management in Bodija Market, Ibadan, Nigeria”, it was recommended that there should be creation of “awareness among the traders on indigenous and effective waste management systems, provision of adequate storage containers and strict enforcement of extant environmental sanitation law by both the Ministry of Environment and Habitat and Ibadan North Local Government in order to ameloirate the problem of waste management in the market.”
The researchers noted that “poor attitude and inadequate involvement of market space users in waste management in Bodija Market contributed to the deterioration of the market environment and remained a constraint to waste management.”
The market was used as a case study to investigate the involvement of traders in the process of managing the waste that they generate, the availability and functionality of waste disposal facilities, the effectiveness of waste collection agency and their level of satisfaction with the waste collection systems.
