The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) is set to inject no fewer than 4,000 personnel into the security arrangement in Lagos State as parts of its activities to tackle the menace of the dreaded Badoo cult group in Ikorodu area of the state.
This was disclosed to Saturday Tribune by the state commandant of the group, Otunba James Udoma, who described the injection as a “directive from the Commandant General of the group, Alhaji Alli Sokoto.
The Lagos State Vigilante Group of Nigeria commandant also urged the Federal Government of Nigeria and the National Assembly to ensure a speedy passage of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria Bill, which is currently before the assembly.
He also called on the Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode to consider the strength of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in all the local governments and local council development areas in the state and utilise it in creating a safer state for residents and prospective investors.
Otunba Udoma said “the Vigilante Group of Nigeria is not a new outfit in the Nigerian security arrangement. It already has the backing of the law in the Nigerian Local Government Law of 1976. It is the only security outfit that has the strength to operate in all the wards in the country.”
The Lagos VGN boss also added that: “In Lagos , Vigilante Group of Nigeria has over four thousand personnel in the nooks and crannies of the state and the commandant general has directed our full involvement in the security of lives and properties in Lagos.”
He also continued that “the bill is before the National Assembly now but we want to appeal to the president and the National Assembly to ensure a speedy passage of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria Bill. They are aware of the efforts of the Civilian JTF in the battle against Boko Haram in the North East.”
“Over ninety percent of the members of the Civilian JTF are members of the VGN . We have helped in in preventing most crimes within the neighbourhood in Lagos State. Crimes are perpetrated within the communities and only those who have a clear knowledge of such communities can combat the crimes,” Udoma said
He also commended the new Lagos State commissioner of police , Imohimi Edgal for his community approach policing, which according to the Vigilante Group of Nigeria’s boss will go a long way in reducing crimes in Lagos State.
Udoma said “I really want to commend the new commissioner of police in Lagos, Imohimi Edgal for adopting the community policing concept as one of the cardinal points of his programme. A determined policeman, who wants to tackle crime will not shy away from community policing. I see the CP succeeding, the way he has started.”
He also called on the state governor to enhance the operations of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria in the state by providing the logistics, training and subvention to encourage officers of Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
